SPL03251 – Enemies of the Party-State: The Uighurs of Xinjiang
Instructor: Andrew Kahn
The Chinese government has reportedly detained more than one million Muslims in so-called re-education camps. Most of those detained are ethnic Uighurs; some are Central Asian Kazakhs or Uzbeks. The Uighurs are primarily from Xinjiang Province in western China and speak a Turkic language. The re-education camps are not voluntary. Those confined undergo brainwashing techniques to invalidate their Muslim Uighur heritage. Political indoctrination, Han language instruction, separation from one’s extended family, and tremendous pressure to conform are the staples of the program. Attendees will leave with a fuller understanding of the Uighurs and the role U.S. corporations play in their plight.
