Course DescriptionIn 2017, opioids were involved in 47,600 overdose deaths in the U.S. The death rate continues to rise as the nation attempts to cope with this deadly epidemic. How did this start and why? Who (doctors, big pharma, government) is to blame? This program will explore the genesis of the opioid epidemic in America and will detail how medicine and government have addressed this crisis. The attendees will gain knowledge on opioids and how they are normally prescribed for pain, have become a leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., exceeding that of motor vehicle accidents.

About the Instructor
Sanford Silverman, MD is the CEO of Silver Lining Medical Consultants. He is a pain management specialist and has been practicing in South Florida for 22 years. He is board-certified in anesthesiology, with added qualifications in Pain Management from the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Diplomate in Pain Medicine from the American Board of Pain Medicine. Silverman is an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Clinical Biomedical Science, FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. He is an expert on opioids in pain management and addiction and has lectured nationally on these topics. In addition, he is author/co-author of over 19 articles in peer-reviewed journals and in 2016, he co-authored a textbook titled: Controlled Substance Management in Chronic Pain; A Balanced Approach.
