Course Description

In recent years we have learned to distinguish usual or customary aging from disease processes, and have gained insights into "healthy aging." However, many healthcare professionals treat aging as a disease, and fail to provide person-centered care. Through an engaging discussion, this session aims to dispel the myth that aging is a disease. Participants will engage with a Geriatrician, a physician specializing in caring for older adults, to understand how a geriatrics specialist can optimize their care by providing person-centered care and ensuring quality of life and function. By the end of the session, participants should be able to identify social factors that appear to impact the health of older persons, identify and promote evidence-based health promotion activities that improve outcomes for older persons, and describe how a Geriatrician is different than an internal medicine or family physician.
