Course DescriptionFrom New York’s Chelsea Hotel to his villa in Hydra to his retreat in Mount Baldy Zen Center, how and why does Montreal bard, Leonard Cohen, continue to return to Zion? Always yearning for the “Jerusalem hidden in Jerusalem,” Cohen volunteered to sing for the IDF troops during the Yom Kippur War. Cohen’s songbook continuously returns to this self-described “myth-home,” with clear-cut intentions that: “I’ve never disguised the fact that I’m Jewish and in any crisis in Israel I would be there…I am committed to the survival of the Jewish people.” From this moment of national despair emerged Cohen’s renowned song Lover, Lover, Lover. Come discover hidden gems mined from the Leonard Cohen archive and published for the first time in Glazer's new book, Tangle of Matter & Ghost: Leonard Cohen’s Post-Secular Songbook of Mysticism(s) Jewish & Beyond. There is nothing as magical as Leonard Cohen's lyrical poetics of Zion, so come learn and sing through that journey towards “Jerusalem hidden in Jerusalem.”
