Course Description

In "The Washington Post," Biden raised a central question to his foreign policy approach: "Will the democratic alliances and institutions that shaped so much of the last century prove their capacity against modern-day threats and adversaries? I believe the answer is yes!" Critics have called this approach the "Biden Everything Doctrine," combining global leadership, foreign and domestic imperatives. In this lecture, Rabil argues that Biden's lofty goals are hard to reconcile and lays out a pragmatist approach based on revitalizing alliances and global cooperation, underpinned by both engaging and deterring big powers.
