Course Description
In this special lecture series, Rabil explores the status of women in Islam, with the intent to cultivate a critical sensibility to Middle Eastern constructions of gender. Bearing in mind some of the controversies and normative perceptions generated by Western interpretations of Middle Eastern societies, the series strives to offer a sociological profile of Muslim Middle Eastern women. By examining a multitude of issues underlying the evolution of their role from a religio-historical, legal, cultural, socio-economic, political, and Islamic revivalist perspective, this program seeks to bring an understanding of the lives of women in Islam.Lectures
