Course Description

Krzysztof Kieslowski is ranked among the greatest international filmmakers of the 20th century. Through his visionary "Three Colors Trilogy" and one earlier and equally influential film, we will explore his profound views on the human condition, reflected through his moralist take on human nature.

Lectures

  1. "The Double Life of Veronique" - 1991: Explores ideas of identity, love, and human intuition through two women who do not know each other yet share a mysterious and emotional bond that transcends language and geography.
  2. "Three Colors - Blue" - 1993: Juliette Binoche gives a tour de force performance as Julie, a woman reeling from a terrible tragedy and undergoing a healing transformation.
  3. "Three Colors - White" - 1994: This most playful of the trilogy is both a dark comedy about the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a reverie about twisted love.
  4. "Three Colors - Red" - 1994: The trilogy comes to a finale in grand fashion with an incandescent meditation on fate and chance.

About the Instructor

  • Shelly Isaacs, M.A. is founder and host for Café Cinematheque International, a foreign language film program presented in venues throughout South Florida. As a creative director/writer/producer and director in advertising, Isaacs specialized in promoting movies & entertainment. He earned a master's degree in media ecology studies from New York University, and taught graduate-level courses in cultural studies. In 2009 he launched Cinematheque at Sea, a film program available on luxury cruises throughout the world.
