Course Description
Songs have the power to transport us back to a decade mirrored in its music. But music was just one part of the pop culture scene in the 1950s. Books of that decade reflected a time that was simultaneously conservative and revolutionary. Marcus examines the literary hits of the Fifties from “The Catcher in the Rye,” whose troubled character captured the hypocrisy of the time to “On the Beach,” which drove home the horror of nuclear warfare. Her lecture includes a discussion of a list of novels which were anthems of the age. Marcus looks at the appeal and staying power (or lack of) of these novels. This lecture includes a colorful PowerPoint and a reading list.Course Info
