Course Description

There has been a growing interest in the development of technologies that aim to improve the capabilities of the human body through natural or artificial means, either temporarily or permanently. This includes, but is not limited to, using artificial intelligence and medical technology to address illnesses and augment physical, sensory, and cognitive capacities. These efforts are collectively referred to as “human augmentation.” In this presentation, participants will be introduced to the new discipline of human augmentation, an interdisciplinary research field that includes contributions from artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, and cognitive science, among other areas of knowledge. Adopting a lighthearted approach, keeping the scientific language accessible to non-experts, and using a rich set of images and videos, Dr. Marques will present a large number of examples of existing augmentations, such as cochlear implants, artificial eye lenses, powered exoskeletons, and deep brain stimulation. Moreover, the most important ethical, legal, and economic implications associated with human augmentation advancements will be discussed.
