Course Description

This program will give an in-depth look at the nature and history of the presidential selection process. How primaries and caucuses work or don't will be considered. Debates and their impact will be discussed, as well. Using engaging visuals and the latest political events, Dr. Wagner will explore what it takes to win a nomination to be president. This program will take students into the heart of the political process, and show what matters and why. He will present survey results, media clips, and analysis of the latest happenings. Combining visuals, data, and occasional humor, Dr. Wagner will show how the system shapes who our next president will be.

About the Instructor

  • Kevin Wagner, PhD, received his JD, MA and PhD in Political Science from the University of Florida. He is currently the Chair of the Political Science Department and a member of the Executive Council of the Florida Political Science Association. He is the former Director of Graduate Studies in Political Science at FAU and currently President of the FAU Faculty Senate and a member of the FAU Board of Trustees. His research and teaching interests include campaigns and elections, as well as media and politics. His work has been published in leading journals and law reviews including American Review of Politics, The Journal of Legislative Studies, The Political Chronicle, and Politics and Policy. He is one of the leading authorities on the effects of technology on politics and has published a book entitled Rebooting American Politics: The Internet Revolution. His most recent book is Tweeting to Power: The Social Media Revolution in Politics. Wagner has lectured extensively on American politics and has been cited in many leading newspapers, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, New York Newsday, Dallas Morning News and Miami Herald. He has been featured on many national television shows, including MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports and NBC’s The Today Show and has appeared as a political analyst for both our local CBS and NBC affiliates.
