Course DescriptionThis program is based on "Journey Through the Spanish Civil War," a book translated from Yiddish into English by the presenter, and "Kaddish for the Fallen: Jews Fighting Fascism," a book written by the presenter and based on her translations of books and newspaper articles written at that time. Journey deals with Jews living in Spain before and during the Spanish Civil War; Kaddish deals with Jews from other countries who volunteered to fight in the International Brigades against Franco. It describes why Jews came to Spain and explodes the myth of Jewish pacifism and communism before, during, and after World War II. It also explains the reasons for those myths. The program includes a Powerpoint Presentation that includes photographs taken by David "Chim" Seymour, a world-famous photojournalist.

About the Instructor
Deborah Green is a retired commercial litigation attorney, native Yiddish speaker and translator, and the daughter of Holocaust survivors. She has translated numerous Yiddish books and articles, primarily Yizkor [memorial] books written by Holocaust survivors and Yiddish newspaper articles written during that time. Her current work focuses on books written by Jews who volunteered to fight in the International Brigades and fought against Franco during the Spanish Civil War. She recently translated "Journey through the Spanish Civil War", a nonfiction narrative describing life in the Spanish hinterlands during the Spanish Civil War, based on articles written at the time the events were happening by S.L. Shneiderman, a foreign correspondent for the world-wide Yiddish Press. She is currently writing "Kaddish for the Fallen: Jews Fighting Fascism," based on never-before translated information that explodes the myth of Jewish pacifism and communism before, during, and after World War II and explains the reasons for those myths.
