Four Interpretations of the Genesis Creation Story: What Happened "In the Beginning?"

Instructor
Michael Gold
SMSD08312

Course Description

Is the account of creation at the beginning of Genesis true? It depends on our interpretation. Jewish tradition teaches that every Biblical verse allows seventy interpretations. We will look at four. What is the simple meaning of the text? What is the rabbinic meaning? What is the philosophical meaning? And what is the mystical meaning? From these interpretations, we can understand the idea taught by kabbalah that we live simultaneously in four different worlds. This lecture will include handouts of sources. Space is limited.
